Idea to agent.
The word has been used to mean almost anything. Here is the concrete version, including the parts we will not do.
If any of this sounds familiar.
You answer the same forty questions a day, and every answer means three tabs.
Invoices arrive as PDFs and get re-typed into accounting after closing.
An enquiry waits two days, because everyone who could answer it is billing.
The same four steps, every run.
Whatever the job is, an agent we ship runs this loop against your real systems and writes down what it did.
Trigger
Something happens in a system you already use. An email lands, a form is filled, a row changes, a clock hits 6am.
Reason
It reads the input, works out what kind of thing it is, and decides which steps to run. Anything it is not confident about goes to a person rather than a guess.
Act
It calls the tools you gave it, and only those. Your CRM, your database, your accounting, your messaging.
Report
Every run writes a trace: what came in, what it decided, what it changed. When something looks wrong you can see where, rather than guessing.
What it can reach, and what it cannot.
Agreed before anything is built, written into the scope, and the same list you get at handover.
It can
- Reach the tools you name, and nothing beside them
- Read and write only where you allowed it
- Notify a person, or hand the whole case to one
- Run on a schedule, or when something happens
It cannot
- Reach anything outside the scope, including the rest of that account
- Decide an edge case. Those route to a person
- Spend money, or send anything on your behalf you did not agree to
- Delete
- Act without writing down that it acted
What it runs on.
- LangChain
- RAG
- MCP
- Anthropic
- OpenAI
- n8n
- Make.com
- PostgreSQL
- Workflow automation
What we will not do.
- Wire a demo to a live model so it looks clever. Ours are scripted, and they cost nothing to serve.
- Give an agent access it does not need for the job in front of it.
- Ship one without a trace, because an agent you cannot audit is one you cannot trust.
- Automate a process that should be fixed first. We will say so.
Questions we get asked.
Including the two kinds of business that ask about this first.
Do you build agents for e-commerce and retail?
It is the most common starting point. Order status enquiries arrive all day and each answer means the store admin, the courier portal and a spreadsheet, while supplier invoices get keyed in by hand after close.
Those are two separate jobs: one agent answering from live order data, another reading the invoice and writing it where it belongs.
What about field service businesses?
Yes. The pattern there is territory knowledge held informally, jobs allocated by phone, and no way for a customer to establish whether they fall inside the service area without ringing to ask.
An agent can answer the coverage and availability questions directly. The dispatch and scheduling half is usually a workflow job rather than an agent one, and we will tell you which parts are which.
What can an agent actually reach?
The tools you name and nothing beside them, including nothing else inside the same account. It reads and writes only where you allowed it, and that list is agreed before anything is built, written into the scope, and handed to you again at handover.
What happens when it is not sure?
It hands the case to a person rather than guessing. Edge cases are routed, not decided. It cannot spend money, cannot send anything on your behalf that you did not agree to, and cannot delete.
How do we know what it did?
Every run writes a trace: what came in, what it decided, what it changed. When something looks wrong you can see where rather than guessing, and an agent you cannot audit is one we would not ship.
Do we need our data tidy before we start?
Less often than people expect, but sometimes yes, and that is a real answer rather than a stalling one. If two teams enter the same thing differently, an agent will act on both versions faster than a person did. We would fix that first.
Tell us the idea.
You do not need a spec. Tell us what you want the business to do and we will tell you whether it is worth building, including when the honest answer is not yet.
